2009 Lorain County JVS School Health Team
7/13/09 -- The Lorain County Coordinated School Health Coalition is excited to announce that students at Clearview, Firelands, Wellington and the JVS are going to notice some changes next school year.

The changes are part of a yearlong action plan developed by a team of school leaders who recently attended the 20th Annual State Coordinated School Health Conference in Cambridge, OH. The action plans focus on improving health and academic outcomes by increasing opportunities for physical activity for students and staff, improving nutritional offerings, and expanding school health teams within each district. With these initiatives, the teams hope to create an environment that promotes positive health and learning behaviors.

“There’s a wealth of research showing that healthy students perform better in school,” states Lorain County Health Commissioner, Ken Pearce. Nearly $3,000 in scholarships was awarded to teams in order to attend the conference. Each team included an administrator who collaborated with staff to weave healthy changes into existing district goals and plans.

This year’s team from Clearview focused on reducing discipline problems and injuries on the playground at Durling Middle School by creating a zoned recess plan. There will be multiple “zones” on the playground where students can choose to participate in games like four-square, basketball, hula hooping, or a walking/running course around the perimeter. This allows all children to choose a way to stay active during recess without overcrowding equipment.

South Amherst Middle School will be focused on employee wellness initiatives to keep their teachers healthy and in school. Students achieve better if their classroom teacher is present and performing at their best each day. The school will be utilizing more preventative services through their health insurance provider and connecting staff to www.livehealthyloraincounty.com to keep them in charge of their wellness. Teachers at the Lorain County JVS will expand their existing employee wellness programs in an effort to keep staff healthy and set a good example for students.

One of the many changes being made in Wellington schools will be using Snackwise Nutrition Rating System to sell healthier snacks on campus and adding ten minutes a day of physical activity for elementary students.
